So You Think that You Have a Social Phobia?
I know what it is like, Ive been there. The anxiety that brings you out in a very frosty sweat. The sleepless nights. The constant loneliness. The questions going round and around within your mind: Whats wrong with me? Why doesnt anyone like me?
Social anxieties and phobias are on the increase. According to the mental health field the net that has websites like facebook and myspace are starting to create a generation of socially frightened humans. It is quite easy to understand with these sorts of sites how this could happen. In times past when people wanted to interact with others there was no other alternative than to go out and see them in a particular meeting place, be it a pub, park, at work and so on. This sort of behaviour kept peoples abilities to interact fresh and up to date. However now that people spend so much time on web sites where the only sort of interaction is hitting keys on a keyboard, this ability to maintain their skills clean is diminishing. The brain simply starts to get rid of that which it no longer uses. Want an example of this? Think of anything you used to be able to do really well that you no longer practice e.g. mathematics, skipping, painting, playing a musical instrument and so forth. Now go and try and do that thing again, I wager you cant, I gamble you dont come close. Why? Because the brain got rid of what it no longer used, it got clearer in other areas, like hitting keys on the keyboard.
Now what about if youre not really a fan of either facebook or perhaps myspace yet you nevertheless find that when it comes to communicating that you are either incapable or basically dont feel relaxed with it. This is the place I came from in my own journey. When I was growing up I fail to know when or where it started or why it ended up in the way it did. I developed a extremely considerable phobia of social events as well as people as a whole. It wasnt that I didnt like people it was just that I was terrified of them. Terrified to open my mouth and talk about what was on my mind. Frightened that what ever I talked about I would be judged on. And quite honestly simply frightened!
A lot of areas of self support may try to explain to you theyre what you are trying to find, that you need to do some soul searching in your past to drag up painful memories and analyse why they happened in this manner. Or even that you need to completely regrese into being a child once again and experience your parents being unkind, or your mates throwing you out of their circle. I am sorry folks this is simply not useful, you can employ these like a crutch all you want but itll not assist to get you to where you would like to be.
